Gingivitis

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. It occurs because when a film of bacteria or plaque accumulates on the teeth. While gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease, it can progress to a more serious dental problem periodontitis if left untreated. There are a number of signs of gingivitis including puffy gums, teeth bleed when brushing, tender gums painful to the touch, bad breath, receding gums, inflammation or swollen gums, and soft gums.

The solution to gingivitis is good oral hygiene. Gingivitis often resolves with good oral hygiene, such as longer and more frequent brushing, and flossing. In addition, an antiseptic mouthwash may help. More serious forms of gingivitis require treatment by a dental professional with follow-up procedures by the patient at home.
