Stained teeth can happen for a number of reasons including the food choices we make. Poor oral hygiene or medications. Stained teeth can occur on the surface or below the surface.
There are three types of tooth discoloration:
- Extrinsic Teeth Stains – These are stains on the surface of the teeth. Typically, this type of stain is caused by coffee, wine, tea, cola drinks and tobacco use. This type of stained teeth require regular dental cleaning and brushing the teeth with whitening toothpaste.
- Intrinsic Teeth Stains – Stains that are below the surface of the teeth. These stains can be treated but require bleaching by a professional or home chemical teeth-whitening products.
- Age-related Stains – The core tissue (dentin) of the teeth yellows over time. As the enamel wears down making the dentin more visible.
